The Geraldine Trammell Hurley Fellowships for Study and Travel
provide financial support for academic study and travel opportunities for students majoring in English. These opportunities may include support for study abroad at international institutions (such as the Oxford University Summer School in England or the Yeats Summer School in Ireland) or support for independent student research. One to four fellowships will be awarded each year, depending on the amount of funding requested by the fellowship recipient(s).

To apply for the Geraldine Trammell Hurley Fellowships for Study and Travel, you must be a Winthrop University English major; and you must submit the following information:

  • A cover sheet with your name, telephone number, mailing address, email address, and one or two sentences summarizing your plans for the fellowship;
  • A one-page explanation/justification of the academic study and travel opportunity you wish to pursue; and
  • An estimated budget, showing how much money you will need (including such items as transportation, accommodations, tuition, books, and food).

As the endowment guidelines state, recipient selection and the number of recipients will be determined by the chair of the English Department and by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
