Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honor Society. Its purpose is to bestow distinction upon undergraduates, graduates, and scholars in academia, as well as upon professional writers who have realized accomplishments in linguistic or literary realms of the English language.

With chartered chapters located on the campuses of almost four hundred colleges and universities throughout the United States, Sigma Tau Delta affords exceptional students in the field of English an opportunity for furthering cultural stimulation, for formulating ethical writing, and for fostering a spirit of fellowship. Those students interested in Sigma Tau Delta and who think they might qualify should see Dr. Marg Neary, the organization's advisor. The current president is Crystal Taylor.

Winthrop's Iota Mu chapter is an active chapter that sponsors scholarship and literary activities to benefit all Winthrop English students, not just STD members. The chapter sponsored poetry readings on campus in the spring of 2007 and raised funds to replace books that were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Our 2007-2008 activities are listed below. Sent: Thursday, February 28, 2008 8:16 AM

To: STD Southern B

Subject: Sigma Tau Delta: Thank You

Just a short note to thank the many, many chapters, individual students, and chapter sponsors, for the cards, notes, emails and phone calls as we in the Sigma Tau Delta Central Office, and as a part of the Northern Illinois University community, dealt with the very sad, shocking events on our campus. The outpouring of responses was as astounding as it was comforting.

Nobody could ever prepare for such things as thisliterally 30 feet from my office building; and nobody would ever think that students would be shot down during a class.

But the campus, and the entire DeKalb community, pulled together with incredible solidarity. And, while still mourning the loss, we are moving ahead.

Please know that your responses truly were, and are, very meaningful; and were there world enough, and time, we’d send individual notes. Please let this suffice, as our gratitude is no less sincere than it would have been in other forms of communication.

2007-2008 activities!

-         Friday, September 28 from 12-2 pm we are having a picnic at Winthrop Lake.  We are asking that everyone bring something yummy to share with everyone.

-         Wednesday October 31, we are co-hosting a Halloween party with the Literary Society on the third floor of Tillman.  The exact time has not been finalized, but the event will probably begin at seven or seven-thirty pm.  Guests are asked to “dress up” as a literary character or author.  We’ll have refreshments and prizes, as well.

-         March 5-8 Sigma Tau Delta is hosting an international convention in Louisville, Kentucky, where members may read their scholarly work.  More information can be found at www.english.org/louisville/papers.htm Congratulations to all our submitters--everyone from Winthrop STD who submitted to the conference had their papers accepted!

-    Finally, we are asking everyone to please submit t-shirt ideas to either Dr. Neary or me. The “official shirts” are available online through the Sigma Tau Delta website (www.english.org), but we thought it would be fun to have our own personalized shirts for our chapter.  Catchy phrases are expected (we DO have the acronym STD) and welcome. There will be a cash prize of $25.
