Winthrop Literary Society

You needn’t be an English major to
join! At our semimonthly meetings, we hold short story discussions, exploring
various avenues of literary criticism and developing events, such as planning
lectures and readings (last semester poet Alan Michael Parker came and read from
his new book).
Following a reading by Dr. Mary Martin (a poet and professor), we held our first
student poetry reading with great success; we plan on holding one every
semester.
Each semester, we hold a book panel with faculty from diverse fields to get a
broad perspective on the story and its context.
Yearly, in the Spring, the English department holds
conferences in which
undergraduate and graduate students can present papers on all matters English
(literature, pedagogy, grammar, rhetoric, etc); one of the key driving forces
behind the formation of this conference was a former WLS officer, and Literary
Society members have presented papers at the conferences since its inception.
The leaders of the Society sponsor field trips to plays, movies, and historical sites.
The Society also presents a series of annual events, consisting of an informational
meeting at the beginning of each semester, a
Halloween social, and a celebration of
Shakespeare's birthday and Sigma Tau Delta inductions in April. The Society also sponsors
frequent Open Mic nights for students to read their own or their favorite poetry.
