Amber
Summers '02 Promotes Good Health The next time you hear the latest news on food and health, think of the research put into the message by dietitians such as Amber Summers ‘02. The Winthrop graduate is working at the Rippe Lifestyle Institute
and Rippe Health Assessment in Celebration, Fla., where she is a
senior research dietitian and is on an executive health assessment
team. She has also appeared on Orlando WESH-2 news as the “local
nutrition expert.” Recently she was on NBC’s new show "iVillageLive!" discussing the American Heart Association’s heart check mark.“I haven't stopped smiling since I moved here,” said Summers, a native of Summerville, S.C. After completing a dietetic internship at the National Institutes of Health, Summers earned a graduate degree in clinical epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health in Maryland. During her studies, she worked in the areas of weight management and cardiovascular disease prevention. The focus of her current research at Rippe Lifestyle Institute is in lifestyle and behavior modification, weight management, and cardiovascular prevention. Last year at the American Dietetic Association conference in Hawaii, she and her colleagues presented the results from the Heart Health Study with Quaker Oats where they examined the effects a low calorie diet including oatmeal on cholesterol levels in overweight participants. For the executive health assessments, her team works with business executives from all over the country. This includes chief executive officers, vice presidents, and upper level management of large companies and private business. “Companies incorporate these assessments into health programs to help keep their top performers in top shape,” Summers said. The assessment incorporates the advantages of state-of-the-art medical technologies and highly qualified health professionals. “These consults actually can be quite challenging,” Summers said. “The dietitians must stay on top of all the current research because these clients come in with incredible questions.” Additionally, Summers is a nutrition instructor for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s health and wellness program. She takes great pride in her work in encouraging lifestyle changes and providing practical nutrition tips for Florida’s finest. Overall, she reports that she loves her work because of the variety. “I present posters at conferences, counsel individuals, write abstracts and articles, and perform assessments ... sometimes all in the same week,” she said. “And I can confidently say it all started at the human nutrition department at Winthrop University.” |
