Brave Rain to Connect with Friends at Homecoming

Class of 1981 didn’t let the rain stop them from
attending their 25th college reunion. |

Rainy weather didn’t dampen the spirits of those attending
Homecoming reunions at the Shack on Feb. 11. Members of the
Class of 1981, the Student Alumni Council and Winthrop
Ambassadors gathered to renew friendships.
Many alums then headed to the
coliseum where junior Craig Bradshaw scored 19 points and
grabbed 10 rebounds to lead |

Winthrop over
Radford 71-44 in front of 4,930 fans, the third largest
crowd ever in the coliseum. The win moved Winthrop into a
tie with Birmingham-Southern for the Big South Conference
lead.

Coaches Hudak and Marshall Reach Career
Milestones
Two Winthrop coaches reached important milestones in February.
Head baseball coach Joe Hudak tallied his
500th career victory while at Winthrop with a 3-2 win over
Evansville on Feb. 17 at the Winthrop Ballpark.

Winthrop Downs Coastal
For Sixth Title in Eight Years
For
the sixth time in eight seasons, and for the second straight
season, the Eagles were crowned Big South
Conference champions in men's basketball. By winning the tournament in front of
5,076 fans at the Winthrop Coliseum on March 4, Winthrop secured
an automatic NCAA tournament bid.

Hall of Fame: Blouin
Fell in Love with Tennis, Winthrop
Carolina de Freitas Blouin`95
fell in love with tennis at age 6 but her family couldn’t afford
to pay for lessons until three years later. Growing up in
Brazil, she found that tennis was a sport of luxury.
Blouin, who recently joined the university’s Athletics Hall of
Fame, told of her love of Winthrop during the induction ceremony
on Jan. 27.

Division of University Advancement has been busy with transitions

* Debbie Garrick was selected as the new executive director for the
Office of Alumni Relations.

"The Tipping Point"
Selected as 2006-07 Common Book
Winthrop freshmen will read “The Tipping
Point”
by Malcolm Gladwell as they prepare to start school in August.
The selection marks the third year of the Common Book Project
sponsored by University College. The Common Book Project is one of
many programs designed to integrate Winthrop students into the
university environment and provide a common academic experience.
