Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians.  Centennial ed. 6 vols. (Ref. ML105.B16 2001)

Floyd, Samuel A. International Dictionary of Black Composers. 2 vols. (Ref. ML105.I5 1999)

Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart: allgemeine Enzyklopädie der Musik.  16 vols. (Ref. ML100.M92) The classic, basic German language source for music.  Somewhat out of date, but still useful. 

The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. 2nd ed. 29 vols. (Ref. ML100.N48 2001) (Also Music Library Ref.)  The classic, basic English language reference source for music.  Very comprehensive, with complete lists of composers' works.  Also available online at Grove Music Online.

Oxford Companion to Music.  New ed. (Ref. ML100.O94 2002)

Sadie, Julie Ann, ed. The Norton/Grove Dictionary of Women Composers. (Ref. ML105.N67 1994)

Histories and Chronologies

Eisler, Paul E. World Chronology of Music History.  (Ref. ML161.E4)  Detailed chronology of music history worldwide, including forms, styles, development of different theories, individual composers, and highlights of what was happening in other arts. Time periods are covered in sequence; from about the middle of the 16th century on, so much information is available that coverage year-by-year is required. Currently covers 4000 B.C.-1796.

Kendall, Alan. The Chronicle of Classical Music: an Intimate Diary of the Lives and Music of the Great Composers. (Ref. ML390.K35 1994) Basically a timeline, covering 1600 to the present, showing musicians' lives against the backdrop of contemporary world events. Profusely illustrated, with a biographical index of composers.

Raeburn, Michael and Alan Kendall, eds. Heritage of Music. 4 vols. (Ref. ML160.H527 1989) Illustrated essays on music history and analysis. Each volume covers a different time period, and each one also contains a short biographical dictionary of composers, but no bibliographies. Good for background information.

Taruskin, Richard.  The Oxford History of Western Music. 6 vols. (Ref. ML160.T18 2005) Not a survey, but more of a true history. Attempts to find connections between music and culture, and to explain music as part of a larger whole of life and history.

ML128.I64.K36 1997)  Extensive bibliography covering eight overlapping categories:  arts; bibliographic resources; curriculum and instruction; foundations, philosophy and aesthetics; journals; psychology; research; and reports, symposia, and conferences. Useful for graduate students in music education just beginning their own research.

Pendle, Karin. Women in Music: a Research and Information Guide. (Ref. ML128.W7.P46 2005)

Phelps, Roger P. A Guide to Research in Music Education. 5th ed. (Ref. MT1.P5 2005 ) Designed for basic courses in music education research, thesis seminars, and independent researchers.  Explains problem identification, writing the proposal and report, methodologies, and trends in the field.

Pruett, James W. and Thomas P. Slavens. Research Guide to Musicology. (Ref. ML113.P83 1985)

Rainbow, Edward L. Research in Music Education:  An Introduction to Systematic Inquiry. (Ref. MT1.R26 1987)

Academic Search Premier.  A multidisciplinary database which provides full-text articles from nearly 4,700 publications, including more than 3,.600 scholarly journals.  Coverage begins in 1975 and spans virtually every area of academic study. The citations, abstracts, and full-text articles can all be printed from DOC, downloaded to a portable drive or floppy disk, or emailed to you. Updated daily.

Grove Music Online. An integrated music resource on the Web. Includes the full texts of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2nd ed.), The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz (2nd ed.). Regularly updated.

InfoTrac PowerSearch .  Group of databases which provide abstracts and full-text articles and images from magazines, journals, reference books, etc. Approximately 46% of the articles cited are available in full-text. The citations, abstracts, and full-text articles can all be printed from DOC, downloaded to a portable drive or floppy disk, or emailed to you.  Use Expanded Academic ASAP, General OneFile, or General Reference Center.

JSTOR.  Provides PDF-format full-text versions of scholarly journals in various disciplines; includes 35 music journals. Links to articles in JSTOR are provided from DOC, and also from other databases through WebBridge, and JSTOR can also be searched directly.

FirstSearch.. A group of 24 databases covering information in the performing and decorative arts and humanities.  Those useful for music include AHSearch, ArticleFirst , Dissertations, ERIC , and WorldCat.

ERIC (EbscoHost) The Educational Resource Information Center. Provides access to education literature and resources. Provides some full-text documents, including all ERIC documents ("ED" numbers) since 2002.

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature International bibliography of scholarly writings on music and music-related disciplines. Dating from 1967 to the present, offers indexing of sources published in over 100 languages. Updated monthly.
