What is exactly is RSS and what does it do?

Syndicated Content or Really Simply Syndication (RSS) is a method of distributing news, web site updates and much more to subscribers. When a web site publishes an RSS feed, visitors of the site can subscribe and receive information such as the daily news headlines, announcements, upcoming events, and even blog updates via the RSS feed. If you have an ever-growing list of websites you check on a regular basis, try RSS feeds and let the news come to you!

How Do I Use RSS Feeds?

To receive RSS feeds you must subscribe using an RSS reader. An RSS reader takes a feed page which is written using XML (Extensible Markup Language) and converts it into a much more readable, stylized and interactive format. Ever clicked on one of those orange or blue icons with the words "RSS" on it and seen what looks like gibberish? That is XML!

RSS feeds can be received two different ways, either being “fed” onto another website (such as a My Yahoo or My MSN accounts) and displayed or they can be received via an email account. There are many services available online that offer one or both of these options to users for free. Many sites offer users the option of subscribing by placing images of their feed icon that will take the user to the page needed to subscribe to a feed via the service of their choice. Below is a list of some of the most popular RSS feed services.

Newsgator
IntraVnews - feeds news into your Outlook account
