Why Do We Seek Private Gifts?

Occasionally, friends will ask us, "Why do you bother?  Are private gifts really needed?  After all, Winthrop is a state institution."  We'll let you decide after you view the following.

• Since 1993 magazine prices have increased 100%;
• Over the last decade, library prices have soared 145%, twice as much as health care costs, over which we have had a national hand-wringing and more;
• The library's current endowment totals less than $100,000; peer institutions are four times as much or more;
• In 2001-2002 alone, our library costs soared over 13%, or more than $50,000 in unexpected costs.
• Finally, state budget allocations continue to shrink.

We cannot move ahead without your help.  Please look over our website and then call us to see how you can help.  We cannot do it without you.  Join us as we aid the "divine gift of language and letters to outlive us all."
