Reference Collection

The Reference collection includes Dacus Library Online and  the library's online catalog (DOC); various online, CD-based and print indexes; and reference books, including directories, encyclopedias, almanacs, telephone directories, atlases, and bibliographies. Most reference sources are for use in the library only. Online Ready Reference Resources is a Dacus Library Research Guide that identifies a variety of online dictionaries, encyclopedias and other ready reference resources.

Dacus Library Online

The Web-based Dacus Library Online  provides access to LexisNexis Academic, FirstSearch, EBSCOHost Research Databases, InfoTrac, and the Internet in addition to the library's book collection and journal subscriptions.   Printing from Dacus Library Online in the library is 10 cents per page for black & white copies, and 20 cents per page for color copies.

LexisNexis Academic

This LexisNexis database provides full-text access to hundreds of  newspapers as well as numerous business, legal and government-related resources.  This database is available only to Winthrop students, faculty and staff.

EBSCOHost Research Databases

This resource provides access to 25 research and academic databases in a wide variety of disciplines.  The databases are available only to Winthrop students, faculty and staff.

Firstsearch

This online database provides access to a variety of specialized indexes, including WorldCat.   This database is available only to Winthrop students, faculty and staff.

InfoTrac 

This Web-based service provides access to 14 different indexes covering thousands of general interest magazines and scholarly journals in all subject areas and magazines, journals, and newspapers in the areas of business, medicine and law. Many of the items retrieved include the full-text of the article. This database is available only to Winthrop students, faculty and staff.

CD-ROM Indexes

A number of indexes and full-text databases on CD-ROM are available on workstations located on the main floor Reference area. Included are Monarch Notes, Masterplots, Granger's Index to Poetry, and Encarta Africana.

Research Guides

Library resource leaflets on a variety of topics are available on Dacus Library Online.  For a full listing, click on "Research Guides".

Newspapers

Local and state newspapers such as The Herald (Rock Hill), the Charlotte Observer, and The State (Columbia) maintain sites on the Internet useful for finding articles of interest. Another site, ABZY NewsLinks ( http://www.abzynewslinks.com ) directs users to other newspapers in the U.S. and worldwide.  Some regional newspapers are available full-text via LexisNexis Academic.
