June/July 2006 Exhibit- Winthrop's May Day Celebration
May Court ca 1942 |
| Winthrop’s May Day festivities began in 1929 and continued through 1970. A May Queen, maid of honor, and a court consisting of four girls from each class were elected by the student body each year. On the first Saturday in May, Winthrop faculty, staff, students and guests attended a ceremony to crown the May Queen. To entertain the new queen and her court, Winthrop students performed skits, music (vocal and instrumental) selections, dance numbers, and comedic stunts. Dacus Library has searched the Archives to assemble an exhibit consisting of photographs, programs, two of the crowns used in the ceremonies, and a 1950s formal gown. |
