Bushman serves currently as the assistant director of bands and as assistant professor of music education at Winthrop University. She is pursuing a D.M.A. in wind conducting at the University of Texas-Austin. She was the associate director of bands at Lassiter High School in Marietta, Ga., for nine years.
She holds degrees in music education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Northwestern University. Her primary clarinet teachers were Laura Ardan of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Lawrie Bloom of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Bushman served as drum major for the "Wildcat" Marching Band and performed with the band in the 1996 Rose Bowl and 1997 Citrus Bowl. In 1996, she was the head drum major for the Atlanta Olympic Band, a 300-member marching band that performed at opening and closing ceremonies.
Bushman is nationally certified in music by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and holds professional memberships in the College Band Directors National Association and South Carolina Band Directors Association. She maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician for marching and concert bands, and she has served in these capacities in numerous states. In 2009, Bushman presented a clinic at the Texas Music Educators Conference, sharing her research on a successful band program in a disadvantaged southwest Texas community. Her academic interests include cultural issues in music education, music teacher mentoring, and using technology in analyzing conductor’s gestures. Her hobbies include baking, running, and spending time with her husband, Brendon, an oboist, their baby daughter, Emmaline, and dog, Kona.
