Helton, tenor, studied voice at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music and privately in New York and Europe. He has taught voice at the University of Cincinnati and Winthrop University. In addition to numerous voice recitals, he has performed with the Charlotte Oratorio, the Charlotte Symphony, the North Carolina Symphony, the Charleston Symphony, the Florence Symphony, the Fort Myers Symphony, the Cincinnati and Philadelphia Symphonies, and the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. Helton remains in demand as a performer and adjudicator and served as the vice president and president of the South Carolina state chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. His performances with opera companies include the Charlotte Opera, the Cincinnati Opera, the Philadelphia Lyric Opera, the Brooklyn Opera, the Boston Opera Society, the Hartford Opera of CT, and the New Orleans Opera. Helton also was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera and an American Opera Audition Award winner.

Helton remains in demand as a teacher of voice. His teaching accomplishments include students who have performed with the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the San Francisco Opera, and the Newberry Opera Company, and he has had numerous students place or win in district and regional voice competitions including the Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Opera auditions.
