Luke spent three seasons acting with the Patchwork Players, a professional children's theatre troupe in New Orleans, La. After leaving New Orleans, he spent 10 seasons with New Stage Theatre in Jackson, Miss. He was house and company manager for the theatre; he also acted and directed in a number of season productions. On the academic side, Luke has taught in theatre and communications departments at Stephen F. Austin State University, Tulane University, and Mississippi State University. He also was a guest director at Truman State University.

Since moving to Rock Hill, Luke has directed productions at several of the community theatres in the area. In 2004-2005, he directed Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit to mark the 50th Anniversary of the theatre program at Winthrop. In spring 2009, he was part of the production team that received a Winthrop Presidential Citation award for the production of Anything Goes. Luke also has directed a production of Aristophanes' Lysistrata.
