Lisa Orum, director
Jazz Voices is a small a cappella group of 12-16 singers performing traditional and contemporary jazz under the direction of Lisa Orum. The group has a distinguished history, having appeared with nationally-known entertainment icons Doc Severinsen, Bob Hope, the Four Freshmen and the California vocal jazz ensemble Beachfront Property. The Jazz Voices have also appeared at conventions of the South Carolina Music Educators Association and the American Choral Directors Association as well as the Chicago national convention of the Music Educators National Conference. Songs in the group’s vocal jazz concerts are drawn from a wide range of sources: Latin jazz, Dixieland, Ragtime, Broadway, the Great American Songbook, African-American Spirituals/Gospel, and original jazz-rock. Composers range from Duke Ellington to Paul McCartney. Arrangers include vocal jazz pioneer Phil Mattson, the Manhattan Transfer, the Kings Singers, the Real Group, and Jazz Voices founding director, Dr. Robert Edgerton. Membership is by competitive audition at the highest level within the Department.
