Department of Design

College of Visual and Performing Arts

Prospective Students

The Department of Design currently does not have entrance requirements beyond those needed for admission to Winthrop. Students who are applying to the Department of Design must first be accepted by Winthrop University and meet all of the requirements to apply, then declare one of the design programs as their major.

If you are not currently enrolled at Winthrop, you should contact the office of admissions. Once accepted and having declared a design program as your major, you'll begin your 1st semester by studying design-specific coursework.

Enrollment into the Interior Design program is limited to a total of 36 students (including transfer and "change-of-major" students) for the Freshman year. Interior Design students will undergo a first year competency review called Specialization Review. Students are required to pass this review before being allowed to proceed into interior design courses numbered 300-and above. A maximum of only 18 students will be accepted into upper division study in INDS. Please see the degree checklist for more information and details on that program.

Enrollment into Visual Communication programs of study (Graphic Design and Illustration) are not limited, but seats in the program are in high demand and sections fill quickly. The earlier you make contact with the department the better. All Visual Communication students also undergo a competency review after the required sequence of courses has been passed (usually, 3 semesters). Passage of the review is based on the quality of work the student presents, and the consistency of various qualities sought across the body of work. Please see the degree checklists for more information and details on the appropriate program.

Transfer students

Be aware that Content and sequencing of applied design programs vary greatly among institutions, and coursework having similar titles may or may not be comparable in content. A portfolio review of design work produced in studio courses at other schools is required of all students who intend that work to apply toward their degree at Winthrop.
