Message from the President
Greetings,
Welcome to the Council of Student Leaders Website! CSL is unique to Winthrop
and serves as our Student Government and is comprised of representatives from
various campus organizations, university colleges and annual member seats
reserved for any student. This combination of student leaders provides a
diverse blend of people and ideas as well as brings together the best of the
best to accomplish task for the student body.
CSL serves as the official voice of Winthrop’s students and seeks to serve the
student body. I encourage you whether you have an idea or an issue big or small
to attend a CSL meeting or visit our office. Too often students don’t realize
the amount of power that they have to affect change and bring about real
reform. During our Annual Fall Retreat
in September 2012, Council members developed our vision statement for the
2012-2013 academic year.
Vision
Statement
“During the 2012-2013 academic
year Winthrop University Council of Student Leaders (CSL) will serve as a
strong liaison between students, faculty, and staff, which will encourage exemplary campus wide
student services. We will promote
citizenship and seek to empower students to be responsible for their own future
by creating awareness campaigns addressing campus safety, environmental
responsibility, and intimate partner violence and encouraging students to vote
in national, state, and campus-wide elections.
Additionally, we will enhance student morale and spirit by offering
diverse student involvement activities especially targeted for the weekends, as
well as increased student involvement and loyalty to WU. All of these initiatives will increase
awareness about CSL within the campus community so that students will know that
they have strong student representation.”
Although the functions of each university's student government is different,
here at Winthrop, the Council of Student Leaders is responsible for such
activities as allocating money to clubs and organizations, serving as the voice
of the student body to the administration, and adding a student perspective to
the implementation of Winthrop's Vision of Distinction. Through our committee
work we strive to build ties in the community and address student needs.
As you look through our website you will see some of our past projects and also
a list of representatives with their e-mail addresses. I challenge you to get
in touch with a representative if you have a question, a comment, concerns, or
even an idea to improve our University and make it the best place to be. 18th Century
American author Napoleon Hill put it best when he said, “You must get involved
to have an impact. No one is impressed with the won-lost record of the
referee.”
Yours in service,
Kambrell H. Garvin
