My interests are literacy in the content areas and motivating diverse learners. |
As a former math teacher, I saw the challenges students faced when they did not have the necessary reading and writing skills to succeed in class. Often, a student understood the mathematical concept, but could not apply that in a word problem, due to difficulties with reading. I also saw the unique needs of students who entered school with lower vocabulary levels, have less access to resources, and, at times, are not in an environment that encourages learning.
I taught 7th and 8th grade mathematics for 10 years in various districts in South Carolina. I have worked at Winthrop for five years. I coordinated the undergraduate middle level education program from 2005-2009. I teach core middle level education courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs. I am from Chesterfield, South Carolina. I am married to Caldwell Jerome Armstrong and we have a daughter named Asheland.
