Linda H. Pickett is an assistant professor in the department of Curriculum and Instruction in the Richard W. Riley College of Education at Winthrop University. After receiving an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, Linda moved to Florida where she taught and was a professional development specialist in Lee and Miami-Dade Counties. She was also an adjunct instructor at the University of Miami for nine years. Linda received a Master's degree from Florida Atlantic University, an Educational Specialist in Teaching and Learning from the University of Miami, and a Ph.D. from Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Australia. Retiring from the public schools after 32 years, Dr. Pickett joined Winthrop University in August 2006. Dr. Pickett is the program coordinator for the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in elementary and early childhood science education methods, principles of teaching grades K-6, and using data to improve teaching and learning. She also supervises students in their field experiences and internships in schools. Dr. Pickett's research interests parallel her teaching experiences with numerous presentations at international, national, regional, and state conferences focusing on integrating elementary science with mathematics and literacy, meeting the needs of diverse learners, and creating and assessing classroom learning environments. Dr. Pickett also collaborates with her graduate and undergraduate students to present at professional conferences. Linda's research has been published in books and national and state journals. She is a frequent contributor to academic seminars and other professional development programs and educational events. Dr. Pickett is also an active member of numerous professional organizations. Dr. Pickett is currently working with teachers and administrators in professional development and partnership schools as part of the NetSCOPE grant. Linda believes that all students can learn to love science when taught through hands-on activities that are integrated with other subject areas and incorporate children's literature. Along with her colleagues in the College of Education, Dr. Pickett is helping to redesign curriculum and field experiences to better prepare teacher candidates to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities, students in poverty, and English Language Learners.
