Dr. Rakestraw, dean of the Richard W. Riley College of Education at Winthrop University, has worked in the field of education for over 30 years. She served as an elementary teacher in her hometown of Gadsden, Alabama and then joined the faculty at Georgia Southern University after earning her doctoral degree from the University of Alabama. She served as associate dean of the college of education at Georgia Southern University for 15 years and also served as a consultant for several years with the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Dr. Rakestraw assumed her position at Winthrop University in 2008. Dr. Rakestraw is married to Dr. Don Rakestraw and they have two married daughters, Charity Carney and Foster Hays.
