Dr. Rakestraw, dean of the Richard W. Riley College of Education at Winthrop University, has worked in the field of education for 30 years. With a bachelors and master's degree in education, she served as an elementary teacher in her hometown of Gadsden, Alabama. After earning her doctoral degree from the University of Alabama, Dr. Rakestraw was on the faculty and served as associate dean of the college of education at Georgia Southern University. She also served as a consultant for several years with the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Dr. Rakestraw assumed her position at Winthrop University in 2008. Dr. Rakestraw has been married to Dr. Don Rakestraw, history professor at Georgia Southern University, for over 35 years and they have two married daughters, Charity Carney and Foster Hays.
