Dr. Keith Benson acted as leader and moderator for a panel discussion, comprised of students from HCMT 493, where discussions were held surrounding the Affordable Care Act. The event was held on Wednesday, October 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the Whitton Auditorium located inside of the Vivian M. Carroll Hall.
The panel discussion was a broad overview of the impact of the Affordable Care Act. The panelists presented an overview of the ACA and discussed potential changes for patients and providers? One key point of discussion was the possible impact of the ACA on college age patients.
The goal of the panel discussion was first to inform WU students and the general public about the ACA. Then engage them in conversations about how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will impact the way in which they interact with the healthcare system. In addition the panel discussed possible changes to the providers of health care.
The panelists were students from HCMT 493, Seminar in Health Care Management, the capstone course for the healthcare management program. Each of the panelists had completed a 400 hour internship in a healthcare organization, which involved a direct interface with the ACA. These students utilized some of the most organizational experience dealing with the ACA on the Winthrop University campus during the discussions, and spent considerable class time preparing for these discussions under the guidance of Dr. Benson.
