The eight full-time faculty include recipients of Winthrop's "Outstanding Junior Professor" Award, the "Kinard Award" for outstanding contributions to teaching, the award as finalist for the state of South Carolina's Professor of the Year, and awards for work with students and for service learning projects. Professors have presided over the Southwestern Sociological Association. Faculty members have published in nationally recognized scholarly journals such as the American Sociological Review, Demography, Sociology of Education, and Signs. One study has found that the department is among the top two percent of undergraduate sociology programs in the country, in terms of article publishing in important journals. The faculty are active in-among other professional organizations-the American Sociological Association, the Southern Sociological Society, the Southwestern Social Science Association, and the American Anthropological Association.
