From January 24 - 30, 2014, a homeless Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, will be conducted across the 46 counties in South Carolina. A Point in Time Count is a single day census of people experiencing homelessness. The SC count is directed by the South Carolina Coalition for the Homeless (SCCH) and implemented by the four regional homeless continuums of care. This is the sixth, statewide annual point in time count of people who are homeless. The SCCH is an education, advocacy and networking organization for the four regional continuums of care: the Eastern Carolina Homelessness Organization (ECHO), Lowcountry Continuum of Care Partnership, Midlands Area Consortium for the Homeless (MACH), and the Up-state Homeless Coalition of South Carolina. Our students have the opportunity to participate in this count through various activities coordinated by the staff at the Pilgrim's Inn at local emergency warming centers, homeless shelters and food pantries throughout Rock Hill, SC. On January 24th, many of our undergraduate and graduate students also took part in braving the cold and searching various locations in Rock Hill where homeless people have been known to take refuge when not utilizing the services of the shelters and warming centers. The students explored these locations between 4am and 7am in the morning.
