About the Department

Welcome to the Department of Social Work at Winthrop University. As a student-centered learning community, the Department follows the established core social work values of service, social justice, the dignity and worth of the person, the importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence.  What do Social Workers do with their degree?

We offer the following degree options to educate students to become generalist practice and advanced practice social workers:

  • The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree - Preparing students to move directly into social work positions in a wide range of settings with a focus in generalist practice. 

  • The Minor in Social Welfare - Designed for students interested in the general social welfare field who do not plan to enter into professional social work practice.
    1. The Full-Time MSW Program – This is a 60 hour program designed for students who are able to pursue full-time enrollment in graduate study over a period of two academic years beginning each August. 
    2. The Weekend MSW Program - This is a 60 hour program designed for working professionals who desire a weekend course schedule.  Graduate studies consist of intensive weekend course offerings and reduced weekly required field hours.  Classes meet one weekend each month.  Students enroll in classes over a period of three years beginning each August.
    3. The Advanced Standing MSW Program - This is a 39 hour program designed for students who have previously earned a CSWE accredited bachelor’s degree in social work.  Enrollment is on a full-time basis for one calendar year beginning each May.
    4. The Advanced Standing Weekend MSW Program – This is a 39 hour program designed for working professionals who have previously earned a CSWE accredited bachelor’s degree in social work and desire a weekend course schedule.  Classes meet one weekend each month. Students enroll in classes over a period of two years beginning each August. 

      

Field placements are an important component in our programs.  The Office of Field Instruction coordinates and supports graduate and undergraduate internships in a wide variety of local and regional agencies.
