About Gerontology at Winthrop

couple

Older people are concerned with maintaining continuity in their lives and seek services that help them maintain their individuality and independence. Employment opportunities exist not only in traditional fields such as health care and social services, but also in businesses, industries, and organizations working to meet the needs of an aging society. In the future, there will be more career opportunities for persons with expertise in the area of aging.

To meet this challenge, Winthrop University offers an interdisciplinary minor in Gerontology that is designed for students in any field who wish to gain the knowledge and skills needed for careers that involve working with or serving older adults. The Gerontology Minor at Winthrop University offers students a solid background in gerontology and an understanding of the issues that affect the older adult population. The program offers a variety of courses in sociology, psychology, contemporary health problems, housing and home planning for elders.
