Dr. Foley completed his dissertation, entitled " 'To Make Him Feel His Manhood': Black Male Identity and the Politics of Gender in the Post-Emancipation South," and received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in May 2012. His research interests focus on the evolution and contestation over ideas of race and manhood in the period after the American Civil War. A portion of that research will appear as a chapter in the edited volume William Gilmore Simms's Unfinished Civil War (University of South Carolina Press, 2013). He has also recently served as assistant editor for a collection of review essays written by the nineteenth century South Carolina writer William Gilmore Simms, also forthcoming from the University of South Carolina Press.
