After receiving her undergraduate degree in History from Mount Union College, Dr. Dunn pursued graduate study at Kent State University. She worked under the direction of Lawrence S. Kaplan and received her M.A. in 1977 and her Ph.D. in 1982. Her doctoral fields included United States diplomatic, modern European, Latin American. and American women’s history. Prior to coming to Winthrop in 1989, Dunn taught as an instructor at the University of Akron and Miami University in Ohio. She also served as a visiting assistant professor at the College of Wooster, the University of Utah, and the State University of New York-Fredonia. From 1987-89, she was employed as a historian with the Contemporary History Branch of the United States Naval Historical Center in Washington, D.C. Dunn received a Commendation from the Chief of Naval Operations in 1988 for her work on women in the United States Navy.

At Winthrop, Dunn teaches a variety of courses in American history. In addition to American history survey courses, she offers courses in post-World War II America, U.S. foreign policy, and American Women’s history. She maintains professional memberships in the Society of Historians of American Foreign Relations and the Peace History Society.
