Dr. Coon started his academic career as an assistant professor of English at Central Missouri State University. He taught undergraduate courses in American literature and composition, and a graduate course on the American realists and naturalists. After five years, he joined the University of Missouri as a continuing education specialist for a three-county Cooperative Extension region. He then left academe for the business world, serving as a supervisor, manager, and director of training and development in several manufacturing organizations. Ten years later he started his own business as a management/organization development consultant.
A decade of consulting work led to an offer to join Inland Paperboard & Packaging as a performance improvement manager. One year later, Coon was promoted to a district human resources manager, a job which brought him to Charlotte, N.C. He retired from Inland in 2003 and has been teaching part-time at Winthrop and other higher-education institutions since then.
