Padmini Patwardhan views the classroom as a marketplace of ideas – sometimes confusing, sometimes unpredictable, but never dull. She teaches courses in IMC, advertising, public relations, communication theory & research, and senior portfolio. She joined the Winthrop faculty in 2005, prior to which she taught at Texas Tech University and the University of Pune in India. Prior to entering academics, Patwardhan was copywriter and creative consultant with ad agencies in India and a columnist writing on advertising and media in an Indian daily.

An active member of the Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication and the American Academy of Advertising, Padmini is currently on the executive committee of AEJMC’s advertising division, chair of the division’s student research competition, and on AAA’s finance and international advertising education committees. She co-directed AAA’s last doctoral and junior faculty symposium and also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Interactive Advertising and the Journal of Advertising Education.

Padmini’s research interests include leadership in communication management, agency issues, account planning, international advertising and public relations, reverse product placement, and media dependency and effects. She is the recipient of multiple grants including funding from the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations, American Academy of Advertising, and the National Association of Broadcasters. She is author/coauthor of more than 25 journal articles, book chapters & research reports and over 30 conference presentations. Her research has been awarded at annual conferences of AEJMC, NCA, AJHA and Southwest Symposium, among others. As Winthrop’s 2011 Thompson Scholar, Padmini developed a comprehensive global learning plan for the Department of Mass Communication that is now being implemented. She served as department assessment coordinator till 2013 and is also coordinator of its latest accreditation self-study. In 2006, she received a competitive Visiting Professor Fellowship from the Advertising Educational Foundation and spent part of summer at the global agency headquarters of Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB) in New York.

She is married to Hemant Patwardhan, associate professor of management and marketing at Winthrop. The couple has two children.
