Master of Arts in Teaching
The Master of Arts in Teaching program offered by the Richard W. Riley College of Education in conjunction with the Department of English encourages students to acquire the broad range of literary knowledge and language arts skills that characterize successful Secondary School English teachers. The M.A.T. program requires that you complete at least 15 hours in ENGL, ENGE, or WRIT courses at the 500-600 level, in the areas specified by the state of South Carolina and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) for initial certification. These hours include content courses, teaching methods, and field experiences. These 15 hours form the Content Area Core of your program. The Department's Graduate English Education Advisor will evaluate your transcript and help you select the appropriate ENGL, ENGE, and WRIT courses to meet these requirements.
