The Master of Arts in English is one of the most valuable degrees you can earn. Almost 50% of the scholars teaching English in colleges today hold the M.A. as their highest degee; it is a valuable credential both for employment and for entrée into doctoral programs and other professional schools. The Department of English at Winthrop University offers two advanced programs of study: The Master of Arts degre with thesis (30 hrs of coursework, 6 hrs of thesis) and the Master of Arts degree without thesis (36 hrs of coursework). While our curriculum emphasizes the study of literature, students are able to take courses in creative writing, composition and rhetoric, and linguistics; up to nine hours of courses may also be taken in collateral or supporting areas. We also work closely with the College of Education, which offers a Master of Arts in Teaching degree with emphasis in Secondary English Education

For information on admissions requirements, and the writing sample and two letters of recommendation required for consideration for scholarships and assistantships, consult the Graduate Catalog. The writing sample and letters of recommendation can be sent directly to Graduate Director, Department of English, Winthrop University, 250 Bancroft Hall, Rock Hill SC 29733-0001.
