Renaissance Literature (especially Drama), William Shakespeare's Plays, Christopher Marlowe's Plays
Debra Boyd, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, began her teaching career at Winthrop in 1984. As a member of the Department of English, she taught a wide range of courses, including freshman composition, technical writing, and literature courses. Her area of specialization is Renaissance drama, and she has taught courses on Shakespeare’s plays as well as on the works of other Renaissance playwrights such as Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson. Her research interests include the history of theatrical productions of Renaissance plays, classical rhetoric, and contemporary drama.
While teaching in the English Department, Dr. Boyd also served for eight years as the department’s director of composition and afterwards served as the director of the university’s Office for Effective Teaching (now the Teaching and Learning Center). In 1999, she was selected as chair of the English Department and led the department for four years, until she was appointed dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in July 2003. In September 2011, she was appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty and is currently serving in that role.
