Message from the Dean
I am privileged to welcome you on behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of the College of Arts and Sciences. We are Winthrop University’s largest college and, in many ways, we are a part of every Winthrop student’s educational experience. Our fourteen departments offer important courses that fulfill Winthrop’s Touchstone Program (pdf) - the general education requirements included in every undergraduate degree program across campus. In one way or another, we come into contact with and influence the life of every undergraduate student who attends Winthrop University.
Of course, these academic departments are home to expert faculty members who will advise, instruct, and mentor you to Bachelor of Arts degrees in English, Environmental Studies, History, Mass Communication, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Philosophy and Religion, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology; Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Human Nutrition, Integrated Marketing Communication, Mathematics, and Science Communication; or a Bachelor in Social Work degree. Many of these disciplines also support and guide students who are preparing to be teachers in particular subject areas.
All BA degree candidates at Winthrop are required to take a minor, and the College of Arts and Sciences offers minor programs in almost all the areas mentioned above plus Anthropology, Applied Physics, Geography, Social Welfare, and Writing. Moreover, our department of Interdisciplinary Studies houses interdisciplinary minor programs in African American Studies; Environmental Studies; General Science; Gerontology; Humanities; International Studies; Medieval Studies; Peace, Justice, and Conflict Resolution Studies; Social Sciences; Sustainability Studies; and Women’s Studies.
The College’s Graduate Programs will help you gain in-depth knowledge in selected fields of study. We offer the Master of Arts degree in English, History, or Spanish; a Master of Liberal Arts degree; a Master of Science degree in Biology, Human Nutrition, or School Psychology; or a Master of Social Work degree. We also provide vital content areas for students who pursue the Master of Arts in Teaching degree.
Most of our faculty members have terminal degrees (PhD) in their disciplines from renowned universities in our region, North America, and around the world. They are involved in scholarly activities, keep abreast of current literature, and publish their work prolifically. They embrace new technologies for research and classroom use. But most of all, they are dedicated to teaching and engaging you in learning for a lifetime. They will involve you in undergraduate research and strive to give you what you need, not just to pass a course but to be a discerning critical thinker and problem solver for the rest of your life and career.
Recently, someone came from outside Winthrop to assist with a review of one of our programs. After interviewing some of our students, this person told me that, without being prompted, students expressed their feeling that “excellence really matters” at Winthrop and the College of Arts and Sciences.
