Cooperative Education
Cooperative Education (Co-op) is an
academic program which provides students with and opportunity to obtain
professional work experience while earning academic credit in their
major or field of interest.
For the employer, Co-op offers a highly
motivated, short-term employee that is ideally suited to handle special
projects, work overloads, or unique assignments.
The employer is responsible for:
- Providing the student with a
meaningful, major-related work experience (no more than 15%
clerical)
- Providing the student with a
minimum of 150 work hours per semester
- Providing a written job description
for the position
- Maintaining said position as a
Co-op each semester a Winthrop student is employed
- Assisting the student in developing
appropriate learning objectives
- Evaluating the student's work
performance at the mid-point and
end of the work experience (more frequent evaluations are
discretionary)
- Providing appropriate supervision,
guidance and safe working environment.
The Co-op student is responsible for:
- Following the policies and
procedures of your organization
- Performing work assignments at an
acceptable level
In addition to gaining valuable work
experience, students are usually compensated for their work. Ideally,
the work experience would last a minimum of 2 semesters.
As recruiting qualified employees
becomes increasingly difficult, many employer are using Cooperative
Education as a means of investing in the future of their companies.
