Winthrop Honors Tyson Waterman During Annual Banquet       By Retiring No. 41 Basketball Jersey

ROCK HILL, SC--Tyson Waterman, a former standout point guard for Winthrop University’s men’s basketball team, was honored Monday night during the school’s annual Athletic Awards Banquet with the retirement of his No. 41 uniform jersey. The framed jersey will now hang in Waterman’s honor in the Eagle Room of the Winthrop Coliseum.

"Tonight we honor a young man who made a special contribution to the success of Winthrop’s basketball program," said Winthrop Athletic Director Tom Hickman. "During Tyson’s playing career, he helped lead the Eagles to back-to-back Big South Conference championships and the school’s first-ever trips to the NCAA tournament. He ranks among the all-time great players in the 23-year history of Winthrop’s basketball program."

Waterman, a 2000 Winthrop graduate and native of Hemingway, South Carolina, ranks as the school’s fourth all-time scorer with 1,461 points and is third all-time in assists with 469. He is among the top 10 Winthrop career leaders in 10 offensive categories. Waterman was voted the 1996 Big South Conference Rookie of the Year and was twice voted to the All-Big South first team in 1999 and 2000, and to the All-Big South Second Team in 1997. In addition, he was chosen on the 1999 and 2000 Big South All-Tournament teams.
