South Carolina General Assembly Honors Winthrop Men's Basketball Team At State Capitol

Rock Hill, SC—The South Carolina General Assembly recognized the 2000-2001Winthrop University men’s basketball team and its coaching staff this morning in Columbia for its outstanding season and continued excellence over the past three years.

Eagles head coach Gregg Marshall, along with his coaching staff and members of the Big South Conference championship team were honored during ceremonies in the House of Representatives and Senate chambers of the State House.

"This is the greatest honor our basketball program has received and every member of our staff and team is grateful that our state government representatives recognize and commend the accomplishments of our young men this past year and over the last three seasons," said Marshall, who has guided Winthrop to an unprecedented three consecutive Big South titles and trips to the NCAA Championship Tournament.

Winthrop has averaged 20 wins over the last three years and has compiled a home record of 36-3, including a streak of 22 consecutive home Big South victories, the third longest streak of conference wins in the nation.

The General Assembly paused in its deliberations to recognize the "grand accomplishments of this team and the pride that has bestowed upon the fine University that it represents." The resolution read that the Winthrop men’s basketball team has performed at a level which very few teams can attain.

"Therefore, the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, expresses their hearty congratulations to the 2000-2001 men’s basketball team at Winthrop University for an outstanding season and continued excellence over the past three basketball seasons and to recognize the Winthrop Eagles return to the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Championship Tournament."

The resolution was introduced by Representative Bessie Moody-Lawrence with support from House members Gary Simrill, F.G. "Greg" Delleney, Jr., Herb Kirsh, Becky Meacham-Richardson, E. DeWitt McCraw, and in the Senate by Wes Hayes, Harvey Peeler, Jr., Linda Short, and Chauncey Gregory.
