Stewart, Knox, Walker Grab Big South Conference Post-Season Honors |
ROANOKE, VA--Winthrop juniors Marcus Stewart and Derrick Knox were selected All-Big South Conference while freshman Tyrone Walker was voted Rookie of the Year for the 2000-2001 season.
The awards were handed out during Thursday afternoon's awards luncheon held at the Hotel Roanoke. The voting was done by the league's head coaches, sports information directors and selected media representatives.
Stewart (Arlington, VA) was voted to the All-Big South first team after he led the Eagles in scoring and rebounding this year with 11.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He scored in double figures in 18 games and had a career-high 26 points against Coastal Carolina in the final week of the regular season. Knox (Decatur, GA) was selected on the All-BSC second team after finishing the regular season with a scoring average of 11.2 points and 40 percent shooting from beyond the three-point arc. He scored career-highs of 24 points twice during the year.
Walker, who averaged 6.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and scored in double figures in six of Winthrop's last nine games, joined Tyson Waterman as the second Eagle player to be voted Rookie of the Year in the 12 years the award has been given.. He was named Big South Conference Rookie of the Week five consecutive weeks.
Winthrop finished the regular season with a 11-3 Big South record and a 16-12 overall slate and earned a second place bye in this week's Big South tournament. The Eagles will play at 8:30 p.m. against either UNC Asheville (3rd seed) or Liberty (6th seed).
