June 21, 2001

ROCK HILL, SC--Coach Gregg Marshall will take the Winthrop men’s basketball team on a 12-day, eight-game trip to Chile during August. Winthrop’s first-ever foreign trip is scheduled for August 8-20 and is open to Eagle fans.

According to Marshall, Winthrop will play five games in the cities of Orsono and Santiago against professional club teams (August 10, 11 and 12 in Orsono) and (August 14 and 15 in Santiago) before participating in the 6th annual Encestando Una Sonrisa tournament scheduled for Aug. 17-19 in Santiago. The benefit tournament is held to raise funds for a children’s dialysis center in Chile.

All returning players from the 2001 Big South Conference championship team along with those who were red-shirted last year will participate. The Eagles return five seniors and four starters from last year’s squad that finished 18-13 overall, won the conference title for a third consecutive year, and made its third straight trip to the NCAA tournament.

Winthrop fans are invited to make the trip and support the Eagles. Minimum cost for each person is $1,700 which includes round trip air fare, lodging in a five-star hotel with the team, all ground transportation and admission to each game. Each person would be responsible for their meals and other expenses. A passport is required for travel to Chile, but not a visa.

Anyone interested in traveling to Chile with the Eagle basketball team should contact the Winthrop basketball office as soon as possible at 803-323-2129 ext. 6221.
