Winthrop Earns Hard Fought 65-54 Win Over William & Mary

Nov. 25, 2000

WILLIAMSBURG, VA--Sophomore point guard Pierre Wooten scored a career-high 16 points and two other Eagles scored in double figures as Winthrop earned a hard fought 65-54 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon over William & Mary.

Wooten, whose previous career-high came at Central Florida two years ago, scored 14 of his points in the second half as he connected on three of four 3-point shots.  Senior Greg Lewis had a season-high 18 points to lead the Eagles while Marcus Stewart added 16.

After leading 24-17 at halftime, the Eagles forged ahead by 18 at 53-35 with 7:42 left in the game, but did not connect on another field goal as The Tribe elected to put them on the free throw line.  Winthrop connected on 12 of its 15 free throw attempts over the final seven minutes.

The victory improves the Eagles to 3-2 and gives them a three-game winning streak as they head to Nebraska for a Monday night game.  For William & Mary, it was its first loss after two wins.
