Eagles Win 14th Straight At Home; Defeat GSU 73-58

    ROCK HILL, SC–Roger Toxey scored a game-high 19 points and Pierre Wooten added 16 to lead Winthrop to its 14th straight home victory, 73-58 over Georgia Southern.

    The win moves Winthrop’s record to 4-3 while GSU drops to 2-4. The Eagles will now travel to Clemson for a Tuesday night game.

    Toxey was a factor on both ends of the floor as he held Georgia Southern’s leading scorer Julius Jenkins to just seven points on 2 of 8 shooting from the floor. Jenkins came into the game averaging nearly 20 points per contest. In addition to his 19 points, Toxey also grabbed eight rebounds to tie for game honors with teammates Marcus Stewart and Anthony Moore along with GSU’s Kashien Lathum. Sean Peterson led Georgia Southern in scoring with 14 while Lathum added 12.

    Winthrop never trailed in the game after jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the opening 2:35. The Eagles opened up a 15 point lead in the first half at 27-12 on a three-point play by Moore with just over five minutes left in the period. Toxey finished the first half with 13 points as the Eagles took a 34-22 lead.

    Georgia Southern made a run in the first five minutes of the second half to cut the Winthrop lead to seven at 39-32 on a lob dunk by Jenkins. A jumper by Todd Shipley trimmed it to a five-point lead at 39-34 with 14:34 left in the game, but Winthrop regrouped behind the play of Wooten, who tied his career-high with 16, and Toxey. Wooten’s two free throws at the 14:12 mark ended GSU’s threat and Winthrop ran the lead back out to 14 at 58-44 with 6:31 left in the game.
