Knox's Career-High 24 Points Leads Eagles Past Elon, 64-60 |
ELON, NC--Derrick Knox scored a career-high 24 points and connected on six of nine 3-point shots to lead Winthrop past Elon 64-60 in a Big South Conference battle that improves the Eagles to 2-0 in league play and 7-8 overall while Elon falls to 1-1 and 6-11.
Knox's consecutive treys in a span of 35 seconds late in the game gave Winthrop a 61-58 lead and then Roger Toxey connected on two clinching free throws with 16 seconds left to seal the four-point win. Knox's previous high game was 21 in the season opener against North Carolina.
Tywan Harris, who joined Knox in double figures with 11 points, kept the Eagles close in the first half as he connected on three 3-pointers as Winthrop trailed 38-35 to a hot-shooting Elon team that shot 65 percent in the opening period. The Phoenix cooled off in the second half, but still finished the game shooting 53 percent. Big South leading scorer was held two points below his season average as he led Elon with 18 points.
Winthrop, which has been hit hard by injuries this year, suffered another blow three minutes into the game when freshman Anthony Moore left the game. Preliminary reports say he may have suffered torn cartilage in his right knee. Moore is a leading candidate for BSC Rookie of the Year honors after being selected Rookie of the Week three times out of four weeks this season.
