Winthrop Gains Revenge Over CSU With 76-51 Homecoming Day Victory |
ROCK HILL, SC--Senior Roger Toxey scored a season-high 18 points and three other players reached double figures as the Winthrop Eagles gained revenge for an earlier season loss with a 76-51 thrashing of Charleston Southern on Homecoming Day.
The win was Winthrop's 22nd straight home Big South Conference victory and improved the Eagles to 14-12 overall and 9-3 in the conference as they remained in a tie with UNC Asheville for second place. Charleston Southern, which defeated the Eagles 58-55 on Feb. 1, fell to 8-16 and 5-7.
Toxey, who was playing his final home game, responded with six of seven shooting from the floor. Also in double figures for the Eagles were Tyrone Walker with 12, Tywan Harris, 11, and Derrick Knox, 10.
Winthrop jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the opening five minutes and went on to hold a 30-21 halftime lead behind Harris' nine first half points. CSU still trailed by nine at 39-30 with just over 14 minutes remaining when Toxey connected on a 3-pointer to put Winthrop ahead by 12. The Eagles increased the lead to as many as 26 at 71-45 with three minutes left when Toxey connected on a 15-foot jumper.
Winthrop will travel to Coastal Carolina on Wednesday and then close out the regular season at UNCA on Saturday.
