Lewis Scores 21, Pulls Down 16 Rebounds In 83-75 Win Over HPU

HIGH POINT, NC–Greg Lewis scored 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Winthrop to a 83-75 Big South Conference victory over High Point Monday night at the Millis Center. The win was the fourth straight for the Eagles and improves their league record to 3-1 and evens the overall record at 8-8.

Lewis led four Eagles in double figures and collected his sixth straight double-double and eighth in his last nine games. In fact, he reached a double-double in the first half when he had 14 points and 10 boards to help give the Eagles a 36-33 cushion.

Tywan Harris gave the Eagles a boost in the first half with four 3-point field goals and finished the game with 16 points. Marcus Stewart scored 11 points and Tyrone Walker added 10 as the Eagles eclipsed the 80-point mark for the second straight game.

Winthrop held a commanding 64-44 lead midway through the second half, but a hot-shooting Panther team connected on six three-pointers in the final eight minutes to cut the deficit to just seven points with 30 seconds left.

High Point freshman of the year candidate Joe Knight scored a career-high 27 points and connected on five of 10 three-pointers.

Winthrop will return home on Thursday night to face Charleston Southern at 8:30 p.m.
