Stephenson Leaves Program

June 20, 2002

ROCK HILL, SC – Winthrop men’s basketball assistant coach Damon Stephenson announced his resignation Thursday afternoon, according to the Winthrop Sports Information Department.

Stephenson, who has been with the men’s basketball program for the past four seasons, is leaving his position to pursue a career as a pharmaceutical representative for a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson called Janssen Pharmaceutica based out of Orlando, FL.

"My experience at Winthrop has been nothing short of phenomenal," said Stephenson, a native of South Portsmouth, KY. "The success we have had as a staff has been very fulfilling, and I’ve found that it has made us quite marketable in the corporate environment. I always said that it would take an incredible offer to get met out of here and the offer Johnson and Johnson made was an incredible offer. My hat goes off to Gregg and Lynn Marshall for everything they have done for me and this program. Gregg is honestly one of the best in the business and I will certainly miss my family here."

"Coach Stephenson came in four years ago and really helped rekindle this program and bring some excitement and a winning tradition to not only the men’s basketball program, but to our entire community," said head basketball coach Gregg Marshall, who will be entering his fifth season at the helm of the Eagles. "I have mixed emotions with regards to Damons’ subsequent career path change. Obviously we will miss him. He was not only a great basketball coach but he was also tremendous in the community and a true friend. At the same time we know he will be a success with his new path of career choice and I wish him nothing but the best and continued success."
