Head Cross Country and Track Coach Ben Paxton


     Ben Paxton is beginning his eighth season as men's and women's track and cross country coach at Winthrop University. He served as the head track and cross country coach at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, before coming to Rock Hill.

     During Paxton's five years at Winthrop he has coached 80 All-Big South Conference performers, four U.S. Junior National qualifiers, two NCAA qualifiers, and a NCAA All-American.

     The Jacksonville, FL, native graduated from Florida State in 1986, where he was an All-Metro Conference selection in the 1500 meters as a senior. He received a master's in athletic administration from Florida State in 1988.

     In his four years at ODU, Paxton-coached athletes broke 12 of the existing 14 school records and three earned all-conference honors. Before arriving at Old Dominion, he served as assistant track and field coach and cross country coach at Mississippi State. Paxton has also coordinated and administered the United States and World Military Cross Country Championships in 1987 and 1988.
