The African American Studies minor is an 18-hour program.

Twelve of these hours are from
four required courses:
- AAMS 300: Introduction to African American Studies
- ENGL/AAMS 312: African American Literature (formerly ENGL 518)
- HIST/AAMS 509: African American History
- SOCL/AAMS 314: Race and Ethnic Relations
Three hours must be taken from:
The remaining three hours are to be chosen from:
- PSYC/AAMS 320: Racial, Cultural and Ethnic Influences on Identity Development
- AAMS 498: Independent Study in African American Studies
- ANTH/AAMS 323: Cultures of Africa
- ARTH 281: Arts of Africa, the Americas, Oceania or ARTH 381: Arts of Africa
(only one of these courses can be taken to meet the requirement of the minor)

330: Women and Literature,
510: Topics in Literature, Language, and Rhetoric
(the preceding six ENGL courses to be taken only when also designated as African American
Studies courses)
