African American Studies Minor:
Course Listing

The African American Studies minor is an 18-hour program. To read a course description, simply click on the course number below or view all the AAMS course descriptions in one PDF file.

Twelve of these hours are from four required courses:

  1. AAMS 300: Introduction to African American Studies
  2. ENGL/AAMS 312: African American Literature (formerly ENGL 518)
  3. HIST/AAMS 509: African American History
  4. SOCL/AAMS 314: Race and Ethnic Relations
Three hours must be taken from:

The remaining three hours are to be chosen from:

  • PSYC/AAMS 320: Racial, Cultural and Ethnic Influences on Identity Development
  • AAMS 498: Independent Study in African American Studies
  • ANTH/AAMS 323: Cultures of Africa
  • ARTH 281: Arts of Africa, the Americas, Oceania or ARTH 381: Arts of Africa
    (only one of these courses can be taken to meet the requirement of the minor)
  • ENGL 310, 311: Special Types of Literature,

    : Women and Literature,

    : Topics in Literature, Language, and Rhetoric
    (the preceding six ENGL courses to be taken only when also designated as African American
    Studies courses)
  • GEOG/AAMS 303: Geography of Africa
  • HIST/AAMS 308: American Ethnic History
  • HIST/AAMS 337: History of Sub-Saharan Africa
  • HIST/AAMS 561: History of the Caribbean
  • MUST 203: Jazz Appreciation or 514: History of Jazz
  • PLSC/AAMS 315: Urban Politics
  • PLSC/AAMS 317: African American Politics
  • PLSC/AAMS 338: Government and Politics of Africa
  • PLSC/AAMS 518: Politics of the American South
  • PLSC/AAMS 551: African American Political Thought
  • SOCL 350: Special Topics in Sociology
    (to be taken only when also designated as an African American Studies course)
