August 2013 Events for Non-Traditional, Veteran, and Transfer Students

Student Check-in

All transfer and non-traditional students should plan on checking in with the Resource Center for Adult Students prior to the start of classes.  When you check in, you’ll be provided with important materials concerning Welcome Week activities, a copy of the Common Book, information about campus resources and a mentoring request form.

Transition to Winthrop Workshops

Join us for a variety of workshops designed to introduce you to all the resources at Winthrop!
As a transfer and/or non-traditional student, many aspects of the college environment are already familiar to you. However, Winthrop University is a new institution with new expectations and procedures, new academic requirements, and exciting new challenges. Your attendance will be a valuable investment in your future college career! 

These workshops are optional to attend, and we ask that you register in advance.  Topics covered will include: Study Skills, Academic Support Resources, Using Technology, Student Involvement, Library Tour, Classroom Tours, and more!  

Come for one session, stay for half a day or attend every single one!  Pick the sessions that interest you the most!

Welcome Week Events

Welcome Week runs from Friday, August 16 through Sunday, August 25, and provides new students with great opportunities to engage on Winthrop’s campus!  As a new non-traditional and/or transfer student, you are encouraged to participate in all events.  A full-listing of events can be found in your Welcome Week booklet, which you will receive when you check in at your residence hall or with the Resource Center for Adult Students.   For more information visit the Welcome Week website.

Mandatory Events

While most events are optional, below are the mandatory events for transfer and non-traditional students.

Saturday, August 17, 2013
1 – 2:30 p.m.: Non-Traditional and Transfer Meeting - McBryde Hall
Afterwards, please consider joining your Adult Student Mentors for the “Rock the Hill-Rock the Globe” event at 3 pm at the Winthrop Coliseum.  Transportation to the Coliseum will be available.

Monday, August 19, 2013
9 – 10 a.m.: Traditions 101—Byrnes Auditorium - Meet your Adult Student Mentors starting at 8:30 a.m.
10:15 – 11:45 a.m.: Assemblies with Academic Colleges - Locations vary by Academic College.  See Welcome Week Book for exact locations.
3:45 pm: Convocation—Byrnes Auditorium – Meet your Adult Student Mentors – Look for the signs and wear your Blue Line shirt!

Welcome Week Fun with the Adult Student Mentors

Kick-off a great semester at Winthrop with your Adult Student Mentors by joining them for some of the many great events that make up Welcome Week.  An Adult Student Mentor will be at the following events – so you’re guaranteed to have someone to sit with.  Meet up with the Adult Student Mentors by looking for their signs at the venue.
