Meet a Student
Hello! My name is Claudia Morante. My major is International Business with a minor in Marketing. I transferred from York Technical College to Winthrop in the Fall 2009. I chose Winthrop University because it has a beautiful campus, and the staff is always friendly and accessible whenever I need something. Winthrop offers a variety of programs and majors, but it also is a place where you can come interact with people from all over the world. Winthrop University supports diversity and has a global learning focus – sponsoring events and speakers who discuss current issues around the world. This focus on global learning was a decisive factor for me when I was selecting a school.
Although the transition to a new school can be difficult sometimes, my transfer process was easy thanks to Winthrop’s staff who helped me during the transition. Being a non-traditional student can be difficult, but Winthrop University offers help for students who are struggling in adjusting to the new environment. Involvement is the key when it comes to enjoying the campus while learning. First, I joined the Honors Program at Winthrop, where I met a lot of people who share the same interest for learning as I do, and most of them became my friends. I also became a member of S.O.A.R. (Serving Others and reflecting) because I was looking to give back to the community. S.O.A.R is a student organization that focuses on helping others and serving the community. S.O.A.R. coordinates services, projects, and volunteer initiatives, which was exactly what I was looking for. As a transfer and a non-traditional student, I wanted to help other students who are going through the same process I went through so I now work for the Resource Center for Adult Students as the Adult Student Mentor Staff Coordinator. We offer guidance, referrals, and opportunities to students, so they can connect with other Winthrop students, faculty, and staff.
It is easy to get involved and enjoy the campus. Winthrop offers countless events each semester, so take advantage of them and put yourself out there to live, learn, and lead the Winthrop experience. I’m so glad I chose Winthrop University as my school. Winthrop has everything I ever wanted in a school - I love it.
