Orientation

Orientation, coordinated through the Office of New Student and Family Programs, is a great opportunity to learn about all the wonderful services Winthrop has to offer, as well as learn about our policies and procedures.

Depending on your classification, you will be invited to attend either Freshmen Orientation” designed for our traditional aged, first-time freshmen, or Transfer Orientation” designed for our post-traditional and transfer students.

Freshmen Orientation

Freshmen Orientation is held during the summer as a two-day overnight experience or in January as a full-day experience. During this orientation session, you will meet other new students, learn your way around campus, learn about expectations for your Winthrop experience, and register for classes.

Please note that the Fall Freshmen Orientation session (Session V) is not an overnight session. Residential students will move directly into their assigned residence hall room on the morning of Day 1. Commuter students will return to their off-campus residence at the end of the program on Day 1 and return in the morning for the Day 2 events and to register for fall classes.

Transfer Orientation

Transfer Orientation is held during the summer or January and is a one-day experience. Two forms of Transfer Orientation exist, but we would encourage you to attend a Full Day session, over the Advising and Registration Only session. During the full-day orientation, you will have an opportunity to network with other new Winthrop students, participate in sessions designed with your needs in mind, and familiarize yourself with campus. You also will have the opportunity to register for classes.

Adult Student Mentors

Adult Student Mentors are current Winthrop students who are post-traditional, veteran, and/or transfer students.  During the Full Day Transfer Orientation sessions, you will be assigned to an Adult Student Mentor who is here to assist you in transitioning to Winthrop. As a previous post-traditional, veteran, and/or transfer student themselves, the mentors can answer questions and help you navigate campus. If you choose to attend either the Freshman Orientation or the Advising and Registration Only Orientation, you will still have the opportunity to meet and work with the Adult Student Mentors throughout your time at Winthrop.  The Adult Student Mentors host a variety of events throughout the semester designed with your needs in mind, and are available to meet one-on-one to chat.
