Thank you for your
interest and investment in developing the best
possible schedule to match our programs and
commitments. Campus-wide feedback from students,
faculty, and staff has led the committee to
develop two calendar
models for broad discussion. These
models share much in common, and I will describe
their some of the common and distinctive features.
The common
features include:
-
Starting times for
classes are consistent all days of the week, and
ALL classes will start at these times.
-
Starting times
occur at 90 minute intervals throughout all days
Monday through Friday.
-
One, two, and three
day-per-week classes (165 min, 75 min, and 50
min per day classes) can begin at any of the
starting times.
-
Three day-per-week
classes would meet on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday.
-
Two day-per-week
classes could meet on Monday and Wednesday,
Tuesday and Thursday, or Wednesday and Friday.
-
Each department and
college would have a balance of classes
scheduled for M/W and T/R and those scheduled
for M/W/F and W/F.
-
There is a
three-hour period on Thursday afternoon when no
classes are scheduled.
The difference
in the two models is the times at which classes
start. In
one model, the
first class time is 7:00am, and classes would start
at 90 minute intervals following. In this model,
the schedule each day would have classes starting a
half-hour later than our current Tuesday/Thursday
schedule (8:30, 10:00, 11:30, etc.) Major
consequences of this change is that the first
somewhat heavily used class time would be 8:30 each
day (instead of 8:00); evening classes would start
at 5:30 (instead of 5:00); and the last class would
end at 9:45 (instead of 9:15).
In the
other model,
classes start on the current Tuesday/Thursday
schedule all day, and the evening schedule is
unchanged.
A
new model has been added which was developed during
fora discussions. It uses the 8:00 am start
time, but has a common meeting time 5 days per week
from 12:30 - 1:45 pm.
The goals for
calendar revisions remain:
1. To
support five days each week of engaged campus life;
2. To
use resources efficiently through balance in the
distribution of classes among available
days and times while optimizing flexibility
that supports individuals and programs;
3. To
protect a time each week when no curricular events
(classes) are scheduled.
Please review
these models and discuss them with colleagues in
your department, your college, and across the
university.
We have scheduled
the following
University-wide fora
